“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” ~Proverbs 4:7
In other words, the first step to becoming wise is to look for wisdom, so use everything you have to get understanding. This sounds familiar…fast forward to the parables of Jesus in Matthew 13:44 -46
“God's kingdom is like a treasure hidden in a field. One day a man found the treasure. He hid it again and was so happy that he went and sold everything he owned and bought the field. Also, God's kingdom is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. One day he found a very fine pearl. He went and sold everything he had to buy it.”
That Pearl is Jesus. That Treasure is Jesus.
Scholar F.B.Meyer explains, “The parables of treasure and pearl are a pair. They describe the various ways we come to know God’s truth. Some happen on it suddenly. They are pursuing the ordinary vocations of life when suddenly the ploughshare rings against a box of buried treasure. The husbandman is suddenly rich beyond his dreams.
But in other cases religion is the result of diligent search. Man cannot be happy without God. He goes from philosophy to philosophy, from system to system, turning the pearls on the dealer’s trays; but suddenly his listlessness is transformed to eagerness as he discovers the Christ. Here is the pearl of great price. He has sought and found, and is prepared to renounce all. “
In Romans 14:17, “The Kingdom of God is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit”; that is here and now, not some distant future. The parable shows us that Jesus brings us the Kingdom of God. He is Wisdom, the greatest of treasures. Seek Him and you will find. Get Wisdom - sounds like an advertising jingle, doesn't it? Maybe it is...

B - Bible Verse (NIV): Psalm 90:12 (NIV) "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."
L - Listen for God's Voice and Pray: Dear Lord, as we reflect on Psalm 90:12, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your guidance and wisdom. Teach us, O God, to recognize the brevity of life and to use each day wisely. Grant us the insight to prioritize what truly matters and to live with intentionality and purpose. Amen.
E - Explore the History and Meaning: Psalm 90 is attributed to Moses, the great leader of Israel. In verse 12, Moses offers a prayerful reflection on the transient nature of human life and the need for divine wisdom. He acknowledges the fleeting nature of time and the importance of using it wisely.
This verse captures the theme of wisdom found throughout the Psalms and the Old Testament. Moses implores God to teach His people to number their days—to recognize the brevity of life and to live with wisdom and discernment.
In the context of Israel's wilderness journey, Moses' prayer carries a profound significance. It serves as a reminder to the Israelites, and to us today, to live with an eternal perspective, making the most of each day and seeking God's wisdom in all things.

S - Summarize and Share: Psalm 90:12 is a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of human life and the importance of living with wisdom and intentionality. As I reflect on this verse, I'm struck by its timeless relevance and its profound implications for how we approach each day.
For me, Psalm 90:12 is a prayer—a plea for God to teach us to number our days, to recognize the brevity of life, and to live with wisdom and purpose. It's a recognition that our time on this earth is limited, and that each moment is a precious gift from God.
How often do we go through life without considering the significance of each day? How often do we get caught up in the busyness of life, neglecting to prioritize what truly matters? Psalm 90:12 challenges us to pause, to reflect, and to seek God's wisdom in how we use our time.
As I meditate on this verse, I'm reminded to live with an eternal perspective—to invest my time and energy in things that have lasting significance, and to seek God's wisdom in all areas of my life. It's a prayer that I echo daily, asking God to teach me to number my days and to gain a heart of wisdom.
May Psalm 90:12 inspire us all to live with intentionality and purpose, making the most of each day for the glory of God. And may we seek His wisdom in all that we do, knowing that true wisdom comes from Him alone.

You often hear, “they twisted the words of the Bible”. or “they are cherry-picking”. I saw a quote the other day by Jordan Harrell and it was summarized hot-topics in a new way and made me realize how much we need the mind of Christ. He is wisdom for us. Wisdom says, “know the context of the scripture. Know the audience. Know what world for which it was written.”
*Genocide is biblical; loving your enemy is biblical. But only one is Christlike.
*Slavery is biblical; Chainbreaking is biblical. But only one is Christlike.

*Retributive violence is biblical; Grace-filled restoration is biblical. But only one is Christlike.

Christ transforms, not the Bible. Be wary of those who know one but not the other.

L - Listen for God's Voice and Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, open our hearts to Your truth and guidance. Help us to hear Your voice speaking through this verse and grant us the wisdom to understand its significance in our lives. May we prioritize Your kingdom and righteousness above all else, trusting that You will provide for all our needs. Amen.
E - Explore the History and Meaning: In Matthew 6:33, Jesus delivers a profound teaching on priorities and trust in God's provision. He urges His followers to prioritize seeking God's kingdom and righteousness above earthly concerns. This verse is part of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, where He addresses various aspects of discipleship and kingdom living. When He is emphasizing the importance of seeking God's kingdom first, Jesus challenges His listeners to align their hearts and actions with God's will. He assures them that when they prioritize God's kingdom and righteousness, their needs will be met abundantly.
S - Study the Key Words or Phrases: Key words/phrases:
Seek first - Emphasizes the priority of seeking God's kingdom and righteousness.
His kingdom and his righteousness - Refers to aligning our lives with God's rule and His standards of righteousness.
All these things will be given to you as well - Indicates the promise of God's provision for those who prioritize seeking Him.
S - Summarize and Share:
Matthew 6:33 isn't just a verse; it's a timeless invitation—a call to realign our hearts and priorities with the very essence of God's kingdom. I can't help but think about the countless times I've been consumed by worry about life, about my future, about striving to do more, or better, and the pursuit of worldly success.
But this verse is a gentle, yet powerful reminder to pause, to breathe, and to refocus my gaze on what truly matters most—God's kingdom and His righteousness. It's an invitation to shift my perspective from the fleeting treasures of this world to the eternal riches found in Him.
In the busyness of life, it's easy to lose sight of God's kingdom—to get caught up in the pursuit of temporary pleasures or the worries of tomorrow. But Jesus' words in Matthew 6:33 beckon me to a different way of living—to a life marked by trust, surrender, and an unwavering commitment to seeking His kingdom above all else.
What does that look like for me? It means starting each day with a prayer, asking God to help me prioritize His kingdom in every decision I make. It means seeking His will in the midst of uncertainty and trusting that He will provide for all my needs. And it means finding peace and contentment in His presence, knowing that He is faithful to His promises.
When I embrace the truth of this verse in my life, I'm learning to let go of the need to control outcomes and instead entrust my future into God's loving hands. And in doing so, I'm discovering a deeper sense of purpose, fulfillment, and joy than I ever thought possible.
So, let's take Jesus' words to heart. Let's make seeking God's kingdom and His righteousness our highest priority, knowing that in Him, we find not only what we need but also the desires of our hearts. For His kingdom is where true abundance, peace, and fulfillment are found.

If you were offered a boatload of precious silver, free of charge, would you take it? No-brainer for sure. Unlimited wealth. Showered with riches. Would ensure a worry-free life, wouldn’t it? Well…
King Solomon experienced this excess - God blessed him with the ‘Midas Touch’. A listing of his possessions was almost endless - he couldn’t fail if he tried. In a nutshell, wealth had became a cold and bitter mistress and he learned that only God could satisfy and fulfill. Wisdom granted by God made him legendary and he passed it on - the book of proverbs was a gift, sound advice for his son, as well as all of humanity!
Here are the first part of chapter 2:
“My son, pay attention to what I say. Remember my commands. Listen to wisdom, and do your best to understand. Ask for good judgment. Yes, beg for knowledge; plead for insight. Look for it as hard as you would for silver or some hidden treasure. If you do this, you will understand what it means to respect the LORD, and you will come to know God. The LORD is the source of wisdom; knowledge and understanding come from His mouth… You will become wise, and your knowledge will give you pleasure. Your insight and understanding will protect you and prevent you from doing the wrong thing.”
Jesus Christ is the personification of Wisdom, the living Word by Whom the universe was created and is sustained. His Spirit is our guide. How can it be that we are in Him and He in us? It’s more than we can think or imagine!
“Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, unto Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus unto all generations for ever and ever. Amen.” ~Ephesians 3:20-21

“Is not wisdom found among the aged?” ~Job 12:12
Hmmm…as I get older, I like to think wisdom increases. Life experience tends to widen the horizon of our minds, giving us a greater pool to draw from. But don’t we belittle our elderly? Especially in America. Feeble body does not equate with a feeble mind, but it seems that we act that as though it does. I remember the moment I realized that a frail great grandma had lived though not one but two world wars, survived the Great Depression and had successfully birthed and raised several children through times of sketchy healthcare. Oh the stories! What wisdom had accrued!
“Wisdom comes with winters,” Oscar Wilde once said, in direct opposition of Socrates, who said “The only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing”. But if we go to scripture, we find that wisdom is in God. The next verse in Job 12 states, “With God are wisdom and might; He has counsel and understanding.“ We are made in His image; we have the mind of Christ; we are in Him Who is called Wisdom FOR us.
As we accumulate winters, we come to realize that James 1:5 is true - we can ask for wisdom and it’s immediately given. That’s wisdom right there! We might continually feel that we ‘let God down’, but that is impossible. He WANTS us to rely on Him. A shepherd doesn’t get mad at the sheep who foolishly wanders off. He guides them back with love and understanding. Over and over again.
It’s no coincidence that we are called sheep!

For me, Isaiah's words are a reminder of the times when I've tried to navigate life's challenges with my limited understanding, only to find myself feeling lost and confused. It is so comforting to know that there's a God whose plan is not just good but wonderful, whose wisdom is not just sufficient but magnificent!
It's in those moments of uncertainty and doubt that Isaiah 28:29 becomes my anchor—a reminder to trust in the power of God and to lean not on my own understanding. His plan, I've come to realize, is far greater than anything I could ever conceive. And His wisdom? It guides me through the darkness, illuminating the path ahead with clarity and purpose.
So, as I meditate on this verse, I'm reminded to surrender my plans and dreams to the Lord Almighty, trusting that His ways are higher than mine and His wisdom is beyond compare. It's a humbling yet liberating realization—one that fills me with a sense of awe and reverence for our God who is both sovereign and wise.
I pray that Isaiah 28:29 inspires you to embrace the mystery of God's plan, to marvel at the beauty of His wisdom, and to trust in His guidance each step of the way. For in Him, we find not just answers but also the peace and assurance that come from knowing that He is in control.

2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.
3 They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.
4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.

“It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.” ~1 Corinthians 1:30
Paul is comparing the wisdom of God with the “wisdom” of the world. It is as far apart as the East is from the West. Think about it - media tells us that cruises and vacations to exotic places brings happiness. Making as much money as quickly as possible and saving it brings peace of mind. I saw a commercial yesterday that made me spit out my coffee. “Pure joy can be found in a certain non-dairy creamer”. Pure joy?? Oh, do we have it wrong!
True joy, peace, happiness is found in Jesus Christ. He is the source, author and originator of all that is good. This verse tells us that He is Wisdom for us - remember, we just have to ask for it and it is given, no stipulations! (James 1:5). Because of Jesus, we are righteous, we are holy and we are redeemed!!! Those are ‘religious’ words, but they just mean that God sees no fault in us. We are set apart from anything ugly and bad; Jesus paid the compensation for all the sin of the world - for you and for me. He did it all!
We’re approaching Easter and that is why we celebrate - because of Jesus. The Cross is THE pivotal moment in history. The world may see it as foolishness - they’d rather celebrate a bunny in pants???
Some day, some glorious day, all will know. “Every knee will bow and every tongue confess, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, that Jesus Christ is Lord.” ~Philippians 2:10-11
Until then, ask for wisdom, forgive, love and help others. Get to know Jesus. You won’t be disappointed.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” ~James 1:5
God has a sense of humor - it’s evident here in the phrase “without finding fault”. That’s funny, right? Here’s a couple other translations:
…let him ask of God, who gives to all without hesitation and without reproach;
…let him make his request to God, who gives freely to all without an unkind word,
So in other words, you can ask for wisdom even when you’re being a putz; God is not going to withhold that from you. He says, “Yes!” It reminds me of my daughter with her kiddos. Every once in awhile she will have a yes-day. They can ask to do anything (within reason) and she says yes. They almost always ask for good things and she is happy to make them happy.
Isn’t God just like this? Wisdom is ALWAYS good. No wonder God wants to give it abundantly and generously! (He’s probably saying, “finally!” haha!). Jesus IS Wisdom and we have 24/7 access.
“Christ is the power of God, and the wisdom of God….But God has brought you into union with Christ Jesus, and God has made Christ to be our wisdom. By Him we are put right with God; we become God's holy people and are set free.” ~1Corinthians 1:24, 30

L - Listen for God's Voice and Pray: Begin by quieting your heart and mind. Invite God to speak to you through this verse. Pray for insight and understanding, asking Him to reveal how it applies to your life.
E - Explore the History and Meaning: Consider the historical context of Proverbs and its intended audience. Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings attributed primarily to King Solomon, offering practical guidance for living wisely. This verse highlights the principle of generosity, emphasizing the blessings that come from sharing with those in need.

"Generous" refers to a disposition of giving freely, while "blessed" signifies receiving God's favor and abundance. "Share their food with the poor" emphasizes the act of providing for those who lack basic necessities.
S - Summarize and Share:
Proverbs 22:9 is like a gentle nudge from God, reminding us of the profound impact generosity can have on our lives. When we open our hearts and hands to help those in need, we're not just giving away material possessions; we're sowing seeds of hope and love into the lives of others. This verse speaks to me on a deeply personal level because it underscores the transformative power of generosity.
In my own life, I've experienced the joy and fulfillment that come from sharing what I have with those who are less fortunate. Whether it's offering a warm meal to a hungry stranger or extending a helping hand to someone in need, I've witnessed how acts of kindness can ripple outwards, touching hearts and inspiring others to do the same. And in those moments, I've felt God's presence so tangibly, His love overflowing in unexpected ways.
Proverbs 22:9 isn't just about giving; it's about living with an open-handed and open-hearted posture, ready to bless others as we ourselves have been blessed. It's a beautiful invitation to partner with God in His work of compassion and restoration in the world. As we heed this call to generosity, may we discover the true richness and abundance that comes from sharing with others in need.

It's the hardest thing to give away
And the last thing on your mind today
It always goes to those who don't deserve
It's the opposite of how you feel
When they pain they caused is just too real
Takes, everything you have to say the word
Forgiveness, forgiveness
It flies in the face of all your pride
It moves away the mad inside
It's always anger's own worst enemy
Even when the jury and the judge
Say you've got a right to hold a grudge
It's the whisper in your ear saying set it free
Forgiveness, forgiveness
Forgiveness, forgiveness
Show me how to love the unlovable
Show me how to reach the unreachable
Help me now to do the impossible
Forgiveness, forgiveness
Help me now to do the impossible
Forgiveness
It'll clear the bitterness away
It can even set a prisoner free
There is no end to what its power can do
So let it go and be amazed by
What you see through eyes of grace
The prisoner that it really frees is you
Forgiveness, forgiveness
Oh Forgiveness, forgiveness
Show me how to love the unlovable
Show me how to reach the unreachable
Help me now to do the impossible
Forgiveness,I want finally set it free
Show me how to see what your mercy sees
Help me now to give what You gave to me
Forgiveness, Oh forgiveness

In Philippians 2:4, Paul urges us not only to focus on our own concerns but also to consider the needs of others. This verse resonates deeply with me as it challenges me to step outside of my own bubble of comfort and actively engage with the needs and struggles of those around me. It's a reminder that genuine love and compassion require us to be attuned to the experiences and challenges faced by others, and to extend a helping hand wherever possible. As I reflect on this verse, I'm reminded of moments in my own life where I've been the recipient of someone else's selfless care and concern. Those instances have left a lasting impact on me and have inspired me to emulate that same spirit of generosity and compassion in my interactions with others. So, as I navigate each day, I strive to embody the principles outlined in Philippians 2:4, seeking opportunities to uplift and support those in need, and fostering a spirit of unity and community wherever I go.

“Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.” ~1 John 4:20
We all get in arguments with our family - that’s natural and normal. But when it goes too far, it becomes an idol that replaces our relationship with God. Imagine a funeral of a parent of several grown children. One comes from out of state with an empty U-Haul to fill. The others who live closer and who have taken care of the parent are grieving and cannot believe their sibling would act in such a way, It causes a rift and a decade-long feud ensues.
At the workplace, church, or in the community, the same problems arise. Our brothers and sisters extend beyond the familial unit. Grudges destroy what is precious to God. He is the source of love, so anything that creates an obstacle in that continuous flow is in opposition to Him.
It takes humility and the Holy Spirit to smooth these sharp edges. It’s so easy to respond in anger. But if I keep this verse in mind, it helps to swallow words that can never be taken back. ‘Let go and let God’ and allow His Spirit to continually pour His love into my heart. ~Romans 5:5

“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” ~Hebrews 13:16
The Bible is chock full of reminders to help those in need. Intuitively, we KNOW that is a good thing. It is one of those things that evolutionists cannot explain. How would a sense of morality develop from primordial slime unless an “Intelligent Designer” was involved?
C.S. Lewis wrote, “Moral law differs from herd instinct…supposing you hear a cry for help from a man in danger. You will probably feel 2 desires - one desire to give help and the other to keep out of danger. But you will find inside you an additional thing which tells you to follow the instinct to help and suppress the impulse to run away.” ~'Mere Christianity'
The greatest good is to love. Also from C.S. Lewis, “Do not waste time bothering whether you love your neighbor; act as if you did. When behaving as you love someone, you will presently come to love them.”
When we love, we please God. Putting others first is always a sacrifice because you are pushing away ME. ‘Me’ LOVES to be pampered and coddled. But here’s the great paradox…when we serve others, we become fulfilled. Our souls soar with the eagles, we are energized with the love of God. It truly is a WIN-WIN!

These words are not mine - it is an analysis of a poem by Isaac Watts:
Psalm 82 is a powerful and thought-provoking psalm that addresses the role of God as the supreme governor and judge of the earth. It begins with a vivid depiction of God presiding over an assembly of earthly rulers, scrutinizing their actions and holding them accountable for their decisions.
The psalmist then launches into a passionate critique of these leaders, accusing them of creating unjust laws and supporting the wicked at the expense of the poor and vulnerable. He challenges their authority and questions their legitimacy, emphasizing their mortality and ultimate accountability to God.
The psalm reaches its climax with a fervent plea to God to intervene and establish justice on earth. The psalmist implores God to send his Son to assume his universal throne and rule the nations with righteousness and compassion. This plea reflects the deep longing for divine intervention and the hope for a better world where justice prevails.
The psalm concludes with a declaration of faith in God's sovereignty and his ultimate authority over all creation. The psalmist acknowledges that God is the true judge and ruler, and that his judgments are just and impartial. This affirmation of God's power and justice provides a sense of comfort and hope amidst the challenges and injustices of the world.
Overall, Psalm 82 serves as a powerful reminder of God's supreme authority and his concern for justice and righteousness. It challenges earthly rulers to govern with integrity and compassion, and it expresses the hope for a future where God's kingdom of justice and peace will be fully realized.

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.” ~2 Corinthians 8:9
If you didn’t know the context of this chapter, one might think that Paul was laying on a huge guilt trip. You wouldn’t be wrong. Paul starts out by describing the churches in Macedonia - they had nothing, yet they wanted to help everyone in need, I picture a town leveled by a tornado, but instead of rebuilding their own homes, they go to the next town and help them.
Would I do this? Would you? We’re so centered on self, our own needs. Common themes of “take care of me first” abound. But when we think about what Jesus did for us, how can we be selfish?
Matthew 13:44 "God's kingdom is like a treasure hidden in a field. One day a man found the treasure. He hid it again and was so happy that he went and sold everything he owned and bought the field.” That man is Christ Jesus, the field is the world and we are His treasure, His riches!
“He was like God in every way, but He did not think that His being equal with God was something to use for His own benefit. Instead, He gave up everything, even His place with God. He accepted the role of a servant, appearing in human form. During His life as a man, He humbled Himself by being fully obedient to God, even when that caused His death—death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” ~Philippians 2:6-10
We are His! Because we are in Him, we are compelled to put others first, to help those in need. “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” ~Philippians 2:3-4

“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?” ~1 John 3:17
We know that Jesus is the answer to every problem, every situation, every heartbreak. He gave us a mission to provide that solution to world, which can be as close as our home or as far away as a third world country! But sometimes, maybe even most of the time, it’s the love of God that is needed. Love is what softens hearts, not words.
God desires that all will know Him, so if we ask Him to show us how to help someone, He certainly will. When we pray in tandem with His will, "magic happens". Coincidences and circumstances will drop in our laps - a map to our target - the ones who need HIM. And that love from us will open their hearts to see Jesus.
We plants the seeds and The Holy Spirit causes them to grow. Check out this verse! He sees us as mighty warriors who spread His word! “The Lord gives instructions. The women who announce the good news are a large army.” ~ Psalm 68:11
There are so many ways to help the hurting - each as unique as you are. God will provide the perfect scenario for you to be a reflection of Jesus in this world!

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” ~Galatians 5:13
Today we celebrate love. Call it a Hallmark Holiday if you want, but it is here to stay. Love is free! Love is kind. Love doesn’t relish the ruin of others. Love doesn’t boast or hate or hold grudges. Valentine’s Day can be all about God’s love. “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” ~ 1 Corinthians 13:13
This section of Galatians is talking about the freedom we have in Christ. Christians were being persecuted by Rome and the Jewish converts were tempted to return to the old law to avoid persecution. The Jewish leaders had an understanding with Rome (the mixture of iron and clay that Daniel predicted hundreds of years before), and were protected, as long as they paid tribute and tax to Caesar. Paul is imploring the Christians to stay strong in their faith in Christ. This freedom does not mean to return to the law.
The whole law is wrapped up in one command, to love your neighbor as yourself (Galatians 5:14: “Love already completes the law; this is the nitty-gritty of the law; to value your fellow human as equal to yourself.” Jesus was the most superior example of this - He is our Valentine, for there is no greater love than to lay one's life down for others. This is the greatest love story ever told and it’s written on our hearts. A covenant of love instead of a covenant of law.
Father, thank you for loving us.

“and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.” ~Isaiah 58:10
This chapter in Isaiah is addressing the motives of our hearts. At that time, some were making a big show of fasting, of giving up food, yet ignoring those starving in the streets. Things haven’t changed much, have they? We now have the added complication of pretenders and panhandlers. Do they deserve our money? What if they use it to buy drugs?
Isaiah is making the point that God looks at our intent - do we sign up to help with a service project because it will make us look good in the eyes of others? Do we make sure that everyone knows that we contributed to a certain cause? If we’re honest, I bet that we can all admit to this at least once in our lives. It’s human nature to seek approval.
But we now have the mind of Christ - the indwelling of the Holy Spirit Who guides us to desire God’s favor. Jesus addressed these same issues in His time on earth in Matthew 6:1-4: "Be careful! When you do something good, don't do it in front of others so that they will see you. If you do that, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. When you give to those who are poor, don't announce that you are giving. Don't be like the hypocrites. When they are in the synagogues and on the streets, they blow trumpets before they give so that people will see them. They want everyone to praise them. The truth is, that's all the reward they will get. So when you give to the poor, don't let anyone know what you are doing. Your giving should be done in private. Your Father can see what is done in private, and He will reward you.”
We can certainly apply this to the 21rst century. Human nature doesn’t change much.
Father, make our motives pure. We want to help those in need. Give us the heart that pleases you. Amen

“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” ~Matthew 5:7
What if this verse meant something other than what we usually think it means? I’ve always been taught that if I am merciful to others then God will be merciful to me. You too?
This verse is part of what we know as the Beatitudes, a section of the Sermon on the Mount. The whole purpose was to teach the people how to live life - how to experience the Kingdom of God on earth. Jesus is saying, “With people, you get what you give. If you forgive a wrong, it’s very likely they will forgive you as well. If you show mercy, mercy comes back.” The people of that time were used to living by the mantra of “an eye for an eye” - in fact, the Middle East still lives by that rule. But Jesus brought a new way - a way that is so unexpected, so surprising that those who listened were incredulous. “What? But that goes against everything we’ve ever lived!”
Why would the meaning return to ‘old school' in our time? We read over and over that God LONGS to be merciful to us. That mercy triumphs over judgment. That Jesus did not come to judge but to save, to show mercy on all. He doesn’t dole out mercy grudgingly, ”Oh, they were kind for 2 minutes and 20 seconds…I’ll do the same back to them”. He overflows with abundant grace and mercy. Let that flow through you to others. Be the grace and mercy of Jesus! You will be blessed with supreme happiness - isn’t that what we all want? To be happy?
Thank you, Father. Give us a heart of mercy to reflect Your Son! Amen
Have a blessed day!

B - Bible Verse (NIV): Proverbs 31:8 "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute."
L - Listen for God's Voice and Pray: Dear God, as we meditate on Proverbs 31:8, open our hearts to Your message of advocacy and compassion. Help us to hear Your voice calling us to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. Grant us the courage and wisdom to be voices for the voiceless and champions for justice. Amen.
E - Explore the History and Meaning: Proverbs 31:8 is part of the passage known as the "virtuous woman" or "woman of noble character." In this verse, King Lemuel's mother imparts wisdom to her son, urging him to use his voice and influence to advocate for the marginalized and oppressed.
The verse emphasizes the importance of speaking out against injustice and standing up for the rights of those who are unable to do so themselves. It calls for compassion and empathy towards the destitute and vulnerable members of society. In its historical context, this verse served as a reminder to leaders and individuals in positions of influence to use their power for the betterment of society, particularly for those who were marginalized or oppressed.
S - Study the Key Words or Phrases: Key
Speak up - Encourages vocal advocacy and action.
Those who cannot speak for themselves - Highlights the importance of advocating for the voiceless.
Rights of all who are destitute - Indicates the need to stand up for the marginalized and oppressed.
S - Summarize and Share:
Proverbs 31:8 isn't just a call to action; it's a gentle tug at our hearts, urging us to step into the shoes of those who need our voices the most. Imagine the weight of those words—speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. It's a reminder that our words have power, the power to bring hope, justice, and dignity to those who have been silenced by circumstances or society.
For me, this verse resonates deeply because it challenges me to consider whose voice I am amplifying in this world. Am I speaking out for the marginalized, the oppressed, and the forgotten? Am I using my influence to shine a light on injustice and advocate for those who are struggling to be heard?
It's easy to get caught up in our own lives, but Proverbs 31:8 gently nudges us to look beyond ourselves and extend a hand to those in need. It's about empathy, compassion, and standing in solidarity with the vulnerable members of our communities.
So, let's take a moment to reflect on the significance of this verse in our own lives. Let's ask ourselves how we can be voices for the voiceless, champions for justice, and agents of compassion in a world that so desperately needs it. And may we find the courage and strength to answer that call, knowing that in doing so, we are living out the very essence of our faith.

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” ~Ephesians 4:32
Valuable advice for anyone and everyone. What would our world look like? Sounds a little like heaven, doesn’t it?
A question was posed…”What would have happened if the prodigal son encountered his critical, fault-finding elder brother before he experienced the embrace, kiss and acceptance of his father?”
It is something to consider, to meditate on, to contemplate. The response that followed was, “How we represent the heart of the Father to others will impact their future life journey.” That’s so true - one comment can fester and rear its toxic head years, decades, later. They become triggers that cause certain reactions. The word, ‘lazy’, lights me up, not in a good way. I need this verse. And I need the previous one: “Get rid of all bitterness, passion, and anger. No more shouting or insults, no more hateful feelings of any sort.” ~Ephesians 4:31.
I’m not a shouter of insults, but the internal bitterness definitely gains traction in my mind on occasion. Only the Holy Spirit can turn this around. We can ask God to give us compassion and the ability to forgive a wrong. He will do it! EVERY TIME. Why? Because of Christ. We are in Him. We are forgiven. How dare we hold any grudges?
Have a blessed day!

B - Bible Verse (NIV): Lamentations 3:22 "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail."
L - Listen for God's Voice and Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, as we approach Lamentations 3:22, we open our hearts to Your message of love and compassion. Help us, Lord, to hear Your voice in these words and to grasp the depth of Your love for us. May this verse remind us of Your unfailing compassion and inspire us to reflect it in our lives. Amen.
E - Explore the History and Meaning: Lamentations 3:22 is a beautiful expression of hope and reassurance amidst the despair described in the book of Lamentations. The author, traditionally believed to be the prophet Jeremiah, acknowledges that despite the challenging circumstances and suffering, God's great love and compassion remain steadfast. These words come as a ray of light in the midst of darkness, a testament to God's faithfulness even in times of difficulty. They remind us that God's love is unwavering and His compassion never fails.
S - Study the Key Words or Phrases:
Lord's great love - Emphasizes the depth and magnitude of God's love for us.
Not consumed - Suggests that God's love protects and sustains us.
Compassions never fail - Highlights the enduring nature of God's compassion and mercy.
S - Summarize and Share:
Lamentations 3:22 is like a warm embrace from God, a reminder of the incredible love and compassion that our Heavenly Father has for each one of us. Imagine this verse as a gentle whisper in the midst of life's storms, assuring us that no matter how tough things get, we are not consumed. Why? Because of the Lord's great love.
Isn't that remarkable? The Creator of the universe, the One who knows every hair on our heads, loves us with a love that's beyond measure. His love is like a shield that surrounds us, safeguarding our hearts and souls from being overwhelmed by life's challenges.
And then there's this beautiful truth—His compassions never fail. It's a constant, like the rising of the sun each morning. It means that no matter what we go through, God's compassion and mercy are right there with us, unwavering and unchanging.
As we journey through life, let this verse be a beacon of hope. Let it remind us that we are cherished beyond our wildest dreams, held in the loving arms of a God whose love is limitless. Even when we stumble or face difficulties, His compassion remains a steady and reassuring presence.
So, let's hold on to Lamentations 3:22 as a source of comfort and strength. In those moments when life feels overwhelming, let's remember that God's great love and unwavering compassion are our anchors. And may we, in turn, extend that love and compassion to others, becoming vessels of hope in a world that often yearns for such grace.

What is the first thing you notice about someone (other than their beautiful smile)? What they are wearing! It the most popular aspect of the Oscars - more people tune into Red-Carpet fashion than the main event. The subject is fodder for entire magazines and even the nightly news will make a report.
I'd never want to be a teenager again - I remember angsting for hours over what clothes to wear. Why is that so important? Because it's the first thing people see - the "first impression", whether we are meeting someone new, or just our best friend. But God tells us to the wear the fruits of the Spirit (maybe Fruit of the Loom wasn't so far off :) - compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. That should be as noticeable as our outfit.
In the first part of the verse, Paul calls the audience (which includes us) chosen, holy and beloved. Isn't that beautiful? I especially love the Greek: Eklektoi, Hagioi and Agapemenoi. These attributes set us apart, to shine as light to the world, reflecting Jesus, adding joy and kindness to a cruel world rules by chaos.
What are you wearing today?

“I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know Me more than I want burnt offerings.” ~Hosea 6:6
This verse shouts ‘Freedom!’ - in the days of Moses (~1446 BC) through the ministry of Jesus (33 AD), anytime you did something to break God’s law, you had to offer a sacrifice to atone for your sin. But THIS! This was a forecast of Jesus and the new covenant that would bring relationship between God and man. I wonder if anyone would have understood this - we STILL have denominational splits because of this very point.
Many many many believe that God works on a point system - the more good things you do, the higher on the scale you rise. Don’t we all entertain that concept from time to time? It’s human nature. Movies, TV and books center around good being rewarded.
But Jesus brought something that blows that out of the water - He gave Himself to atone for the sin of the world. HE was the sacrifice so we simply have to acknowledge God. Get to know Him. Talk with Him. Listen for His voice. He doesn’t want our “good works” if our heart isn’t in tune with Him. He wants our love. If we are knowing Him, then our whole being will do the things that please God. Like Jesus said in Matthew 22:36-40, the most important command is to love - everything hangs on that - if you love with God’s love, you will please Him. Isn’t that an amazing freedom?!

B - Bible Verse - Job 6:14 (NIV) "Anyone who withholds kindness from a friend forsakes the fear of the Almighty."
L - Listen for God's Voice and Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, we seek Your wisdom and guidance today. Open our ears to hear Your voice in this verse, and grant us the grace to understand its message. May we be inspired to embrace kindness and compassion in our interactions with others, reflecting Your love and mercy. Amen.
E - Explore the History and Meaning: This verse is an amazing reminder of the importance of kindness and compassion. Job, amidst his suffering, speaks about the significance of showing kindness to a friend. He suggests that withholding kindness from someone in need is like forsaking the fear of the Almighty.
Job's words emphasize that compassion and kindness are not just moral virtues but are deeply rooted in our reverence for God. They are expressions of our faith and acknowledgment of God's love and mercy in our own lives. This verse wants us to reflect on our interactions with others, particularly our friends and those in need. It reminds us that compassion is a reflection of our reverence for God and a way to embody His love in our relationships.
S - Study the Key Words or Phrases: Key words/phrases:
Withholds kindness - The act of not showing compassion or failing to extend help.
Friend - A person we have a close and caring relationship with.
Forsakes the fear of the Almighty - Implies that lacking compassion contradicts our reverence for God.
S - Summarize and Share:
In the middle of Job's suffering, we can learn a huge lesson —one that's both deep in meaning yet it’s for everyone. Job, during his trials, tells us that withholding kindness from a friend is more than a mere act; it's a reflection of our relationship with the God.
Consider it as a delicate balance between our human interactions and our connection with God. When we show compassion and kindness to a friend in need, we're not only demonstrating empathy but also aligning our actions with the essence of God's love and mercy.
Job's message is a reminder that our relationships and our faith are interconnected. Compassion isn't just a moral virtue; it's a spiritual practice. It signifies our recognition of God's love in our lives and our willingness to extend it to others. When we withhold kindness, we risk neglecting a fundamental aspect of our faith—acknowledging the goodness of our Creator.
So, as we continue the theme of Cultivating Compassion this month, let's cherish the wisdom in Job's words. Let's cultivate compassion as a bridge between our human interactions and our spiritual journey. It's not about complexity; it's about the profound simplicity of love in action.
In the middle of our daily lives, may we find opportunities to practice compassion, knowing that in those moments, we honor God's love and connect with our shared humanity. In doing so, we not only bring solace to others but also renew our own spirits and draw closer to the Divine.

James grew up with Jesus as his half-brother. Can you imagine?! I wonder what his life was like? Anyone with siblings can agree that rivalry is a thing. As a kid, wasn’t it great to have your brother or sister get in trouble with your parents? I suspect that James got frustrated when Jesus never did anything wrong (I bet he was loving when twelve-year-old-Jesus “got lost” in Jerusalem! Luke 2:41-52)
So James has an edge and it shows in his writings. He fires out verses that cut to the core, but we need that sometimes! I’m sure there are some who get offended at his straight talk but you know where you stand! Check out this chapter (James 4):
“What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the Spirit that He has made to dwell in us”? But He gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” ~scripture from James 4
Father, let us take from James what you have meant for us to hear. Let us listen with humble hearts, knowing that these words are meant to make us better. Thank you for the different personalities that are evident in Your Word. Let us draw near to You” Amen

L - Listen for God's Voice and Pray: Heavenly Father, I close my eyes and take a deep breath, and offer a prayer of gratitude to You for revealing Yourself to me in unique and profound ways.
E - Explore the History and Meaning: Job, a righteous man who faced unimaginable suffering, uttered these words after a transformative encounter with God. It was a moment of deep revelation and understanding. Job's journey reminds us that even during our trials, our faith can lead to profound encounters with God.
S - Study the Key Words or Phrases: The key phrase here is "now my eyes have seen you." It signifies a profound shift from just knowing about God to a personal encounter with Him.
S - Summarize and Share (Personal Devotional):
Imagine if you'd heard stories about a magical place your whole life, but you'd never actually been there. That was a bit like Job and his relationship with God. He'd known about God, heard stories, but He hadn't really experienced Him in a deep way. Then life threw him into some incredibly tough times.
During those hard moments, something unbelievable happened. Job felt God's presence in a way he'd never felt before. It was like finally visiting that magical place he'd heard about but never seen. Job realized that God wasn't just a distant idea; He was right there with him, like a caring parent during the worst of times.
Sometimes in our own lives, we might know about God, but we haven't really felt His closeness. It's a bit like knowing there's a delicious cake but never taking a bite. But when we face tough times, it can be like finally taking that first, delicious bite. In those moments, we can feel God's love and strength carrying us through, just like Job did.
As we flip through the pages of Job's life, we find a profound transformation. Job, a man who knew of God but had not experienced Him deeply, found himself right in the middle of unimaginable suffering. His friends offered explanations, but they all fell short. Job longed for a personal encounter with God.
Then, during his pain and questioning, it happened. He encountered God in a way he could never have anticipated. The presence of God became real, tangible, and undeniable. It was like finding an oasis in the middle of a barren desert. In that moment, Job transitioned from a distant awareness of God to an intimate relationship.
In our own lives, we might be on a similar path. We know of God, but there may come moments when our challenges seem overwhelming or our sorrow seems like more than we can handle, or when we long for something more - a genuine encounter with God.
So, take heart from Job's story. Know that even in the darkest times, you can experience the presence of God in a deeply personal way. Like Job, your life's narrative might shift from merely knowing about God to truly knowing Him, and that shift can be the most transformative journey you ever take.
Like Job, may we recognize His hand in our lives, even in the middle of our trials.
