A Clear Bold Call to a Holy Life

2 Timothy 1:9 - He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time.

This passage in 2 Timothy chapter one is right after Paul is sharing how thankful he is for Timothy’s faith and holiness.  He was thanking God that he remembered Timothy in his prayers. I’ve talked previously about how Paul felt protective of Timothy because he was often very timid. In this verse, he is giving Timothy a clear, bold call to live a holy life.

We should never be ashamed of God’s gospel. We have been saved because God has a purpose for us. It wasn’t because of anything we have done, not our bad deeds, and not even our good deeds! Grace is showing favor to us when we don’t even deserve it.

God’s grace was given to us before the beginning of time. That just goes on to prove that it comes from something in God. It couldn’t be anything in us, because we didn’t even exist yet! He didn’t have to give us His grace, because we most certainly don’t deserve it, but in saving us, God is calling us to a holy live.

Paul was reminding Timothy that he was called to be holy. God appointed him, invited him and welcomed him as a child of Christ into a relationship with Him and set him apart for Him. That’s what a holy calling is.

As a believer in Jesus Christ, we also have a divine call from God. He welcomed, invited, and appointed us to be His and that will never change.  If you really see yourself as being called by God, what difference does that make in your life as to how you act and even react to situations around you?  Remember, we are called to do His work, not ours.

He wants us to live in a manner that is consistent with our salvation. He wants us to be holy.
