“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” ~Proverbs 15:1

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” ~Proverbs 15:1

Just this morning I got a call from a friend who was in the midst of a tough time in a relationship. Things happened that just made their blood boil. They had a few days to stew on all the things that were an injustice and internally, they were ready to burst.

But the Holy Spirit intervened and they started praying that anger would be taken away and things would be resolved. The very next day, a call came that completely turned things around. The relationship is now better than ever.

Coincidence? No way! God did that! Anger doesn’t accomplish anything good. James tells us in chapter 1: “Remember this, my dear friends! Everyone must be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to become angry. Human anger does not achieve God's righteous purpose.”

Angry people are filled with anger (duh) but perhaps they need soft, gentle words in their life. The characteristics of Christ (aka, the fruit of the Spirit) are the key ingredients of resolution. They squash pride and the inability to let things go. We do not always have to be right - but we DO have to reflect the image of God.
