A Great Light

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” ~Isaiah 9:2

Any time I hear stories of people trapped or lost in caves, I start getting short of breath. I feel claustrophobic panic rising (it’s happening right now). Usually the tale involves the burning out of head lamps, batteries dying, sprained ankles and complete darkness. My over-active imagination puts me in their struggle to find their way out. Agh! What a nightmare!

What would light mean? Hope. Salvation. Safety. Freedom. Peace. Can you imagine it? Get to the light as quickly as possible! It’s a magnet, drawing those who are hurt, scared, lost, cold, hopeless, desperate. NO one would refuse to go to that light.

Guess what (or WHO) Isaiah is talking about in this verse? Jesus Christ, the Messiah! If you look up this section of scripture, it is titled, “For unto us a Child is born” and is often read during the Christmas season. Jesus is all of those things that a rescuing light would be to lost spelunkers. He said, “When I am lifted up [on the cross], I will draw all to Myself” ~John 12:32. "I am the light of the world," He said. "Whoever follows Me will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness." ~John 8:12

Seek that Light! It will never disappoint or let you down. That Light will never burn out or leave you in the darkness. It envelopes you as a rising sun covers the land, as rain soaks into the earth.

"With the loving mercy of our God, a new day from heaven will shine on us.
It will bring light to those who live in darkness, in the fear of death. It will guide us into the way that brings peace." ~Luke 1:78-79

Have a blessed day!
