According To His Mercy

Image of a boy swimming deep in water with the words "He saved us not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy. Titus 3:5"

“He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His own mercy” ~Titus 3:5

If I could only have one verse from the whole Bible, I’d want this one. It is the gospel in its entirety. He saved us. Period. Not because of anything we did, but because of His mercy.

What exactly is mercy? It is not getting what we deserve. What do we deserve? Paul teaches that the wages of sin is death. And ALL sin because of what one man, Adam, did. Sounds bleak and hopeless, doesn’t it? So, I deserve to die because of what someone else did? That’s not fair. BUT (there is always a but) in the same breath, Paul tells that because of one Man, Jesus, ALL will be made alive. Is that fair? I’ll take it! That is mercy.

James 2:13 tells us that “mercy triumphs over judgment.” Jesus took the judgment on Himself, willingly. He took the wages of sin for the whole world so that mercy would triumph. And when He comes again, “every knee will bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” ~Philippians 2:10-11

I think that Paul had the words of Isaiah in mind, written 730 years before “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out in righteousness a word that shall not return: ‘To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance.’” ~Isaiah 45:22-23

Have a blessed day!
