An Instrument of Righteousness

“Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.” ~Romans 6:13

Having a musical background, the word ‘instrument’ immediately makes itself known as I read this verse. I think of piano, trumpet, violin, flute, each very different in sound and purpose, but together make the most beautiful music. The composer knows what is needed at the right time. For example, a sweet lullaby helps to put your small one to sleep. What if a trumpet blast suddenly breaks in?

Suppose that we see God as THE great composer? If our hearts say, “Lord, use me for your purpose”, you will become a lovely part of His grand symphony. Together with the Holy Spirit, you will avoid being the intrusive trumpet blast.

This word, ‘instrument’ comes from the Greek word for an offensive implement of war. Interesting. But it makes sense because we are in a spiritual war. “For our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against authorities and powers, against the world-rulers of this dark night, against the spirits of evil in the heavens. For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. ~Ephesians 6:12; 2 Corinthians 10:3-4

Our weapons are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control. They are forgiveness, understanding and compassion. THESE are victorious. They answer that question, WWJD [what would Jesus do?] There is never an offensive note in that song. Perfect instruments of righteousness.

Have a blessed day!
