"And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful." ~2 Timothy 2:24-25

Check out this translation from the Mirror Bible: “In your position as someone completely dedicated to the Lord there is no virtue in winning an argument but losing the person! I would much rather have you exhibit a sensitive courtesy towards all people; skillfully educate them and keep your cool under pressure. Your gentle way of instructing those who oppose you will inevitably lead them to see what God believes concerning them and give them the best possible chance to acknowledge the truth.” ~2 Timothy 2:24-25

Paul is writing to Timothy, the pastor of the church in Ephesus - this passage is directed towards anyone who teaches the Word. It’s great advice for anyone, really.

How many times have I lost my cool when discussing Biblical things with someone who is argumentative? Too many! Once I even threw a wad of paper towels at a doctor [where I worked]. Not my best moment.

But, as always, God turned my failure into something good. That doctor came to me the next day, after avoiding me until everyone left our office and said, “I didn’t sleep all night - I was considering what you said.” It turned into a positive conversation which I’m sure will bear fruit someday, if it hasn't already.

When we’re passionate about something, it’s natural to get excited; when we have to defend our passion, things tend to get ramped up suddenly and sharply. We have to let the love of God pour into our hearts, temper and tame our speech, guide our words and emotion.

Father help us! We cannot do this on our own - we put too much of ourselves wrapped up in a chaos of feelings into what should be a reflection of Jesus Christ who was calm and collected, relaxed amidst the storm, able to think with discernment and wisdom. We know You will answer our prayer. Amen!
