Be Careful to Observe the Decrees and Laws
"Then you will have success if you are careful to observe the decrees and laws that the Lord gave Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged." ~1 Chronicles 22:13
David wanted to build a temple -a house for the Lord. But God told him "no, your life has been full blood and war. But your son - your SON will have a life of peace and rest - he will build this house for me." David was devastated - he desperately wanted to do this. It reminded me of Moses wanting to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land, but God had a different plan for both of these faithful men.
It may seem unfair to us - I'm sure it did to Moses and David - but the bigger picture pointed to Jesus (as it always does!). Moses represented the law and David represented war and bloodshed. The end of their missions represented the coming the Jesus Christ, who brought in the new covenant of love, peace and rest.
Did David sulk and whine? No, he got busy and gathered all the materials that would be needed - no expense was spared. He praised the Lord with a prayer of gratitude and humility. Then he passed the temple torch to Solomon with the words of 1 Chronicles 22.
David could have rationalized that he was doing it for God - don't we do that sometimes? If we stubbornly plow ahead, the plans always fail. Listen to His voice - sometimes it's in your gut. "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." ~Romans 8:28
