Believe Also
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me.
In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” ~John 14:1-3
This scene takes place at what is known as the Last Supper - the night Jesus is betrayed, arrested and sentenced to death by crucifixion. He knows what is coming, yet He is calming His closest friends. He is emphasizing that He and the Father are one. The original language states, “you believe in God [already], so believe in Me, too.” That claim is actually what sent Him to the cross.
I added verses 2-3 because is reminded me of something - a couple of months ago, my friend’s roommate was having a difficult, demanding guest stay for a week in their tiny apartment. My friend didn’t know how he was going to live though it (he’s very dramatic :) but rather than fussing and grumbling, he kept reminding himself that God already had a mansion prepared for him and someday he’ll be able to ‘run with scissors’.
We all have that that hope!! He is coming again! Coming to take us home. The word ‘home’ is so layered with meaning in the Greek - it brings in all the imagery of coziness, love, security, comfort (like the popular notion of the Scandinavian life style of hygge). Hold onto that hope!
