Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called

“Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before Him.” ~1 Corinthians 1:26-29
This is the David vs. Goliath story fast forwarded. ‘Survivor’ even used this theme for one of their seasons. It was great to see - the Muscles mocked the Nerds, even though most knew the Biblical story and it was often heard, “You KNOW how it turns out!”. In a show based somewhat on physicality, it was so interesting to see how the Davids won out in the end.
Why is this important? I think there are 2 reasons. First, it demonstrates that ANYONE can do mighty things when God is backing them. Remember the verse we had a few days ago…”I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” [Philippians 4:7]. If God desires something, nothing can stop it. I’ve heard first-hand of stories of missionaries smuggling Bibles into Communist countries. Their suitcases are searched, but the scripture is invisible to enemy eyes and the Bibles get through.
Secondly, the Goliaths could brag about their abilities, adding their strength to the power of God. Paul writes to the people of Galatia in Galatians 6:14: “The cross of our Lord Jesus Christ is my only reason for boasting.” He resisted the urge to use his education and background as means to further his mission.
God can use you. He can use me, We’re not rich or famous. We’re every-day kind of people who love Him. Ask Him to move mountains and do the impossible through you. Then stand back and watch out! That power of love is a flood that cannot be stopped.
