“But it is the spirit in a person, the breath of the Almighty, that gives them understanding.” ~Job 32:8

Have you ever made a good decision about something and thought, “Go me! I’m proud of myself for making that choice!”? I don’t think anyone can say, “nope, I’ve never thought that”.

Job deflates our ego-balloon so very gently. Aren’t those words beautiful? The breath of the Almighty…it doesn’t vary amongst different translations, usually indicating that there is no dispute over wording.

God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit, gives us wisdom. The same breath that gives us life.

When we read this, I think we struggle with thinking that God rules as a puppet-master. But if that were true, wouldn’t He use a rigid metaphor like bone instead of breathe to describe Himself? Breath is light and airy, unable to be held, non-intrusive but oh-so-necessary.

Almighty God, guide us, give us understanding, wisdom and discernment. From the simplest of things like what we eat for breakfast to the hard, important things, such as choosing doctors, spouses, colleges. We know that You see the big picture and have our very best in mind. Let us trust You, increase our faith and fill us with Your love. Amen.

“God has given us the Holy Spirit, who fills our hearts with his love. And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” ~Romans 5:5b; 8:28
