But Seek First His Kingdom and His Righteousness

βBut seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.' ~Matthew 6:33
This is part of the Sermon on the Mount - Jesus has a captive audience who is hungry for His teaching. These words are familiar to us and don't really prompt a 'wow' response but to the Jews, this stunned them. At that time, a Roman soldier could take ANYTHING from a Jew. Imagine hearing that you could ask God for anything and it would be given to you. He's not talking about material things - Jesus is referring to knowledge and wisdom. The one thing the Jews have been longing for is right in front of them. Messiah! And not just for the Rabbis - this was for the working man, the women and children, as well. ANYONE who wants Jesus immediately has access.
I wonder if Jesus' younger brother, James, heard these words - for years later, he wrote "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him." ~James 1:5
This verse takes me back to my Youth Group days and a song by Maranatha! Squeaky, uncertain, adolescent voices raised in praise, attempting to harmonize. But I'm certain it was music to the ears of God.
Seek ye first the kingdom of God And His righteousness; And all these things shall be added unto you. Hallelu, Hallelujah! Ask, and it shall be given unto you; Seek, and you shall find. Knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Hallelu, Hallelujah! Man shall not live by bread alone, But by every word That proceeds out from the mouth of God. Hallelu, Hallelujah!
Have a blessed day!
