Children of the Light
“You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.” ~1 Thessalonians 5:5
I have to confess that when I hear “children of the light”, my mind immediately brings up images of a cult with ‘lost-in-space’ vibes. But it does that with comets, as well. My imagination goes hay-wire sometimes, but studying passages like this helps to structure and re-direct those unruly thoughts.
Paul wrote this letter to the new Christians in Thessalonica. They had lived lives full of idolatry and darkness and now Paul was encouraging them, pushing back their fears and insecurities about the future.
‘Light’ was a common theme - remember that Paul’s first experience with Jesus Christ involved a light from heaven that blinded him. In Acts 9:3, “…he approached Damascus, and suddenly a bright light from heaven shone around him.” Later, Paul would write to the people of Corinth: “For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” ~2 Corinthians 4:6. The Light revealed Jesus Christ.
The great prophet, Isaiah, hundreds of years earlier wrote in 9:2 “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.” And in John 1:9, “A new day for humanity has come. The authentic light of life that illuminates everyone was about to dawn in the world!” Jesus Christ not only unveiled the light - He IS the Light.
We are children of the light. My mind has been reset.
Ephesians 5:8 For once you were darkness, but now in union with the Lord you are light. Walk as children of light.
Have a blessed day!
