Commit to the Lord

"Commit your way to the Lord, trust in him and he will do this. Psalm 37:5"

“Commit your way to the Lord: trust in Him and He will do this.” ~Psalm 37:5

I wonder what “this” is? Currently, when we say, “Let’s DO this!”, it’s a rally cry to take action, anticipating a clinched outcome. Picture a huddle before the team takes to the field, arms outstretched, hands meeting in the middle. The emphasis on ‘DO’ as they break apart pumps them up and fuels their bodies with adrenaline.

We’d better take a look at Psalm 37. When viewed as a whole, it’s a contrast between good and evil. David must have been grumping that the wicked always seemed to come out on top. We wonder that today, don’t we? The “good” folks are trampled underfoot. The “evil” are successful and wealthy - above the law, in many cases. The News highlights the bad and hides the good. Books, movies and songs have been written about that very phrase, “Nice Guys Finish Last”.

However, God assures David over and over, “Trust Me and all that is good will come to you.” In the first seven verses, God commands him (and us) to trust, delight, commit, be still and to wait. Why? Because He will make our righteousness shine in the darkness, give us the desires of our heart, thwart the wicked and bring peace. This was not only prophecy for the time of David, but for the coming Messiah. All things point to Jesus Christ and this is one more example. Verse 11 says, “But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.” Doesn’t this sound familiar? Jesus spoke these words in the Sermon on the Mount hundreds of years later in Matthew 5:5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.“

Jesus fulfilled all of these prophecies and guess what? We, as His body get to hang on for the ride. We get to share in His inheritance. We get His peace. We shine like the noonday sun. Good overcomes evil, a promise that is a common thread throughout the entire Bible. God will DO this! “Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him.” ~Psalm 37:7
