Do Not Be Yoked

“Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” ~2 Corinthians 6:14

So often, this verse is used in the context of dating and marriage.

But what if it was meant for each one of us personally?

What if it is a picture of our old man in Adam vs our new creation in Christ? We struggle with this every day…sometimes even minute-by-minute! The pull towards our old sin nature seems to be irresistible at times. Here your mind can insert an image of the angel on one shoulder trying to be more persuasive than the devil on the other.

Check out the previous chapter - 2 Corinthians 5, especially verses 11-21 up through 6:13. If we look at the big picture, there is no competition. Jesus won the war. The battles along the way build our character, strengthen our faith and give us wings to fly. We can be confident in the faithfulness of Jesus Christ.

Paul is reminding the Corinthians [and us] of who they are in Christ. Your old ‘me’ has no place in your life. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” ~ 2 Corinthians 5:17

We can mess up and fail and backslide and mess up more-er, but Jesus doesn’t write us off. In fact, He CAN’T. Look at 2 Timothy 2:13 “If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.” That’s because we are part of His body. He can’t “cut off His finger” because it was bad. Don’t be discouraged - keep looking to Him, listen for His voice, Remember that He will chase you down and fight ‘til you’re found.

There's no shadow you won't light up
Mountain you won't climb up
Coming after me
There's no wall you won't kick down
Lie you won't tear down
Coming after me

‘Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God’. ~Cory Asbury
