“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.” ~Proverbs 27:1

“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.” ~Proverbs 27:1
I think about American in the early morning of 9/11 - no one could have predicted what was coming in a few hours. All those schedules meant nothing. This was an extreme event, but demonstrates that things can change on a dime.
‘Putting the cart before the horse’; ‘counting chickens before they’re hatched’…many secular ‘proverbs’ are based on Solomon’s wisdom. It seems like a no-brainer, but it is so easy to look ahead. We’re encouraged to set goals and make plans - that isn’t the issue.
The key word in this verse is ‘boast’ - Jesus used this attribute in a parable about the man and the barns (The Rich Fool in Luke 12:16-21). This uber-farmer-dude was hoarding his abundant crops with no intentions of sharing. Jesus made it clear that this man had no relationship with God and only cared about himself. The day he built the bigger barns is the day he left this earth.
Almighty God, guide our plans for the future - keep us from taking pride in our own accomplishments, knowing that it is YOU Who is at the core of all that we are. We thank you for our abilities and gifts - let us use them for Your glory. We want to enjoy each day and not worry about what’s to come, for Your love pushes back any and all fear. We are overwhelmed by Your mercy and grace. Let us continually be grateful for the gift of Your Son. Amen.
“If it is not the LORD who builds a house, the builders are wasting their time. If it is not the LORD who watches over the city, the guards are wasting their time.” ~Psalm 127:1
