Does So to the Lord
"Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God." ~Romans 14:6
I think Paul could have been writing this to modern day Christians! There are so many different denominations - sorting them all can be staggering. I heard of one church that split all because of the location of the coat rack. That seems silly - I'm thinking there is more to the story. I personally experienced the difficulties revolving around style of music, instrumention, and using video.
Paul is reaching out to the believers - some Gentiles, who were ultra-sensitive to the subject of meat - they had been used to offering food to idols and some questioned whether they should eat or not. Others were Jews, who were familiar with holy days and abstaining from certain activities on the Sabbath. Paul is trying to unite the ranks - today he would be saying, "if you want to avoid meat on Fridays, go ahead, as long as you are doing it in reverence for the Lord. If you think drinking alcohol is wrong, then please abstain, but don't judge others who do partake. If you want give up something for Lent, do so with the right motivation, thanking the Lord for His sacrifice. But nothing is required of you. Only to give thanks to God for all you have been given."
"All things indeed are pure to the pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience have been defiled." ~Titus 1:15
Yesterday, our nation celebrated a day of thanksgiving - a grateful heart comes from the Lord, whether one is aware of Him or not; my prayer is that all would come to that realization. Imagine what our nation would be like if all were thankful!
"Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!" ~Psalm 107:1
