Double Edged Sword

For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

"For the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and of spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart."  ~Hebrews 4:12

Did you ever notice that you can read the same Bible passage over and over and something new will pop out?  I often wonder, "How haven't I seen that before?" The words don't change, do they?  No, but our perception can.  No matter when the words were written, they are applicable to us today!  And God opens our hearts and minds to see what HE wants us to see at certain times. I listened to a pastor for years who started every message with this verse. For YEARS. I often wondered why and now I know the answer.

But we have to be careful not to apply our modern day thoughts and customs to any of the Bible.  The audience and genre of writing has to be taken into account. For example, some books are poetry, others are full of metaphor and symbolism, others refer to myths and common stories of that time.  Hebrew writings are known for their repetition and exaggeration, both designed for emphasis.

So, how are we supposed to understand anything?  Pray and ask God for wisdom and understanding.  Read biblical scholars of varying views (in other words, don't just pick people you agree with) - yes, some are dry and boring, but there are plenty who grab and keep your attention.  The Bible is ALIVE! God wants us to understand His love, His mission, His Son.  His Spirit was sent to guide us.  Wow!  The ultimate GPS!

Have a blessed day!
