“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” ~Psalm 23:4

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” ~Psalm 23:4

When I read these words, my mind goes to Sight and Sound’s production of ‘David’ in 2023. This psalm was put to music and the inspiration had to have come straight from the Lord. The melody was full of longing and love, worship and praise, all rolled up in one BIG feeling.

The real David wrote this during a time when he was a fugitive, running for his life from a demon-possessed king, who was once like a father to him. Can you imagine the pain of that betrayal? David could have harbored bitterness and revenge, but he went straight to the Lord and relied solely on Him.

This whole Psalm displays that trust - an example for us to follow when we are faced with hard things.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely Your goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. ~Psalm 23
