Fill Me With Joy

Psalm 16:11 - You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

David loved giving thanks to God and in this scripture, he is thanking the Lord for showing him the way to heaven. He knows that not even in death will we be separated from God.  He knew that he would survive death and enjoy being in God’s presence forever. He has complete and utter trust in the God of his salvation.

You will fill me with joy in your presence… joy that completely satisfies me, is only found in the presence of God. We’re not talking about joy that is happiness, like when you get a gift or a raise. We’re talking about a deep joy that brings a sense of contentment to the soul that no other joy can give.

David’s faith was so strong that even when he was in battle, being shot at with arrows or chased down by his enemies, he was at peace. He knew that God held him in his right hand and would protect him. He took refuge in the Lord.  Taking refuge in God does not mean that we will escape from pain and suffering. But it does mean that God is in control and he is not bothered by the chaos here on earth. I don’t mean he is unconcerned with things happening in our lives. I mean that he does not panic, and neither should we.  He remains in control, which should give us confidence during our troubles.

It is so important to remember that the sense of security, joy and blessing that we find in the Lord is something that comes to us despite our external circumstances. We will find rest and refuge in the Lord as we are going through our troubles and trials. And when we take that refuge in the Lord, we’ll have unspeakable joy, peace and comfort that no material possession or worldly pleasure can ever compare.
