Find Grace to Help Us in Our Time of Need

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” ~Hebrews 4:16

Here’s another unbidden wizard-of-oz-image moment. If you’ve read the post from July 8th, you’ll understand the reference. That verse was “In Him and through faith in Him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.“ ~Ephesians 3:12 It’s the word ‘approach’ that does it. My mind connects words like tentative and timid, unsure and ill-prepared.

But God is different! Worlds apart, complete opposites. First of all, the throne has a qualifying description - it’s a throne of GRACE. Grace explodes with gifts and praise and glory and unmerited favor. Not some musty old man hiding behind a shabby curtain expecting impossible tasks to be done to receive what is asked.

And approach with CONFIDENCE! Confidence is knowing that we can rely on God, that He keeps His promises, that He is Truth and Wisdom and Love.

The last word, ‘need’, has a much deeper meaning than what we’d expect. We need ice cream, the latest gadget, a baby goat….but these are wants. In the original Greek, it means ‘to be secured or re-enforced as if tying down a boat in a storm’. Wow. I’m ashamed of our language. This is telling us that God will not let us get washed away in the chaos of life, even when it feels overwhelming. Horrible things happen to us, but Jesus immediately grabs our hand to pull us back into the boat. [Matthew 14:31]. He’s on call 24/7. He never slumbers nor sleeps. Ever-present, Ever-loving, Ever-gracious.

Have a blessed day!
