Fixing our eyes on Jesus
“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” ~Hebrews 12:2
We talked about Jesus being the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End…there is another bookend pair in this verse - ‘pioneer and perfecter’. Other translations use ‘Founder and Finisher’, ‘Source and Goal’, ‘Author and Finisher’.
They all paint the picture of Jesus, who eternally exists outside of time, creating faith in Adam, building and increasing through the ages of Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, Samuel, David, Daniel, Mary, John until the cross, THE pivot of time and history.
The Cross is where faith was perfected - there is NO greater demonstration of faith than Jesus handing over His life to bear the sin of the world. Ahhh, our words can’t do justice to this ultimate action of love. He put all trust in the promise of His Father to raise Him back to life. When Jesus cried, “Tetelestai!” from the cross, “It is finished!”, He had just accomplished, finished, and perfected faith.
But what about us? That was over 2000 years ago. When Jesus rose again, He took us all with Him. We are IN Him. And because of HIS faithfulness, we will live for evermore. This verse says that He sat down, indicating that His mission was accomplished. God did this. For us. For you and for me.
“No one has greater love than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” ~John 15:13
