For He Who Promised is Faithful

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” ~Hebrew 10:23-25

There’s a little word hidden in here, easily skipped over or quickly dismissed. I’ve never noticed it before, maybe others have, but the word is ‘spur’. The first definition is “a small spike or a spiked wheel that is worn on a rider's heel and used for urging a horse forward.” It is not used as a gentle loving touch - it’s a surprising jab.

I laughed outloud as I pictured Grandma Walton (of the show ‘The Waltons’ 1972-1981) poking Grandpa with a broom when she wanted him to do something. Jab! Jab! Jab! Moving him toward the door. No gentle loving touch there! But there WAS love. A deep love that can remind us of how much Jesus loves us.

Maybe this is a softer version of tough love, which is defined as: ‘the act of treating a person sternly or harshly with the intent to help them in the long run.’ The author of Hebrews teaches that we are to hold each other accountable to live an authentic Christian life. It’s not easy for some - I hate confrontation and this appears to have that result. But the Holy Spirit can allow the spirit of peace to soften those hard edges and bring about the intended outcome of “love and good deeds”.

God ALWAYS enables what He asks of us!

Have a blessed day!
