For My Thoughts Are Not Your Thoughts, Neither Are Your Ways My Ways
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” ~Isaiah 55:8-9
Who doesn’t cheer when the bad guy “gets what’s coming to him”? We all want to see justice done. The most exciting movies are the action-packed vendetta stories where the villain gets his due. It seems right when evil is exposed and punished.
I recently saw a bumper sticker that said, “Karma is kool. Back off”. It made me start to think. All religions have a concept of karma imbedded in their doctrines. Even the Bible teaches that we reap what we sow. BUT…Christ teaches something different. The reaping/sowing bit refers to our life with other humans and suffering the consequences of our own actions. If you cheat on your spouse, statistics show that you will experience that same thing at some point. Rudeness begets rudeness, sin spawns more sin. ‘So what’s different about Jesus?’, is a logical question.
We try to humanize God. We expect Him to react as we would in the same circumstance. The prophet, Isaiah, speaks for God when he says, “We don’t think alike - My thoughts are completely opposite of how you think.” Jesus brought a new way, a path of forgiveness and love which does NOT mean we are to be soggy dish-raggy doormats. We are not supposed to let others walk all over us. But having a nature of serving, of peaceful interchange, of letting-go is a HUGE Jesus-magnet. We can change the world by His power, His example and His love in us, one situation at a time.
Father, remind us to react with the mind of Jesus, for Your thoughts came to earth with Him. It is something we can hardly comprehend. You gave us this access, something beyond the imagination. Thank you! Amen
