For the Foolishness of God is Wiser Than Human Wisdom

“For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” ~1 Corinthians 1:25

Isn’t this comforting? Even though we know that God is omniscient (all wisdom) and omnipotent (all strength), it seems more of a theological bullet point at seminary. Paul knew that we would need to see a comparison with ourselves to really get it.

At the time of the writing, the middle of the first century, ‘Philosophy’ was THE trending thing, especially for the Greeks. People would mob the square just to hear someone spout ‘wisdom’. It was the social media platform of the day and Paul would use this to preach Christ. He says, “Salvation is so simple that it seems foolish. The Jews want miracles and signs and the Greeks want brilliant convincing speech, but I don’t come with that. I bring Jesus Christ and the message of the Cross in the power of the Holy Spirit. Do you know why? So that your faith is based on the power of God, not on what I say!”

But Paul’s words WERE effective. He captured their interest with talk of a great mystery, with the wisdom of GOD being given to those who believe. Who wouldn’t be captivated! Read 1 Corinthians chapters 1-3 and you’ll see what I mean. He emphasizes how different we are from God, yet when we know Him, those lines blur. In verse 12, Paul writes, “We received the Spirit that is from God, not the spirit of the world. We received God's Spirit so that we can know all that God has given us.”

This “we” includes you and me! Jesus Christ brought wisdom and power to earth and shared it with us. We have 24/7 access to that - unbelievable, but true. Why do we hide that gift away, like we’re cleaning up after Christmas? All we have to do is ask. “Do any of you need wisdom? Ask God for it. He is generous and enjoys giving to everyone. He will give you wisdom.” ~James 1:5

Let’s make 2024 the year of growing in the “grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.” ~2 Peter 3:18

Have a blessed day!
