For You Were Once Darkness, But Now You Are Light in the Lord
I have to confess that when I hear “children of the light”, my mind immediately brings up images of a cult with ‘lost-in-space’ vibes. But it does that with comets, as well. My imagination goes hay-wire sometimes, but studying passages like this helps to structure and re-direct those unruly thoughts.
Paul wrote this letter to the new Christians in Ephesus. They had lived lives full of idolatry and darkness and now Paul was encouraging them, pushing back their fears and insecurities about the future.
‘Light’ was a common theme - remember that Paul’s first experience with Jesus Christ involved a light from heaven that blinded him. In Acts 9:3, “…he approached Damascus, and suddenly a bright light from heaven shone around him.” Later, Paul would write to the people of Corinth: “For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” ~2 Corinthians 4:6. The Light revealed Jesus Christ.
The great prophet, Isaiah, hundreds of years earlier wrote in 9:2 “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.” And in John 1:9, “A new day for humanity has come. The authentic light of life that illuminates everyone was about to dawn in the world!” Jesus Christ not only unveiled the light - He IS the Light.
We are children of the light. We are of Jesus! Let’s join the Angels from the realms of glory proclaiming Messiah’s birth.
Come and worship, come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King!
