Free From Sin

"But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life." ~Romans 6:22

Wait a minute...I thought we were freed by Christ? Why does this say we are slaves? Context is so important - look at verse 16: "Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?".

Just like idolatry, an idol is where your focus lies, slavery is what or who runs your life. "Word Studies" defines the word for slave here: 'is used with the highest dignity in the NT – namely, of believers who willingly live under Christ's authority as His devoted followers.' Peter tells us that since we were bought with such a costly price, we ought to live in obedience and fear the God who purchased us--the God and Father who will judge our every deed (1 Peter 1:17-19).

But as always, everything points to Jesus, the ultimate slave Philippians 2:5-11 'Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, made in the likeness of men, and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.Therefore, God also has highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven and things in earth and things under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is Lord in the glory of God the Father. 

We are set apart, made holy by Him and are IN Him, servants of the most High.
