Gather the Harvest
“I sent you to harvest where you didn’t plant; others had already done the work, and now you will get to gather the harvest.” ~John 4:38
My husband coached elementary basketball for 13 years - he taught them the basics, laying the foundation needed to become a solid player in the future. When the girls went to the state semi-finals many years later, he felt part of their success - it truly takes a village to raise an athlete.
Jesus was teaching the same thing, using a agricultural metaphor. Most believers have multiple folks they can credit for their spiritual upbringing. Some know the exact date when they believed. Others, like me, recognize different events throughout their lives that re-enforced their faith.
I think I’ve always believed - my Mom said my first sentence was “Ja loves me” (Jesus loves me). That's because she planted those seeds. There were times at youth retreats and church camp and Sunday school that some would claim the harvest - I’m sure I’m part of a tally once or twice. But numbers aren’t important. It is the fruit that comes by the Holy Spirit that tells the story - the community of faith working together to make the orchard grow good fruit.
John 4:36 “And he who reaps receives wages and gathers fruit to life eternal, so that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.”
Have a blessed day!
