Generous to the Poor

“Whoever despises his neighbor is a sinner, but blessed is he who is generous to the poor.” ~Proverbs 14:21

I wonder if King Solomon knew that he was writing about the Messiah? Probably not. He wouldn’t have even known that his proverbs would become part of the holy scriptures. Did he realize that he was inspired by the Holy Spirit - that every single “jot and tittle” came from above? [jots and tittles are little markings in the Hebrew that help determine the meaning. Jesus referred to them in Matthew 5:18 when He said, “Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”]

Peter tells us in 2 Peter 1:20-21 that “no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” In other words, God used each writer’s personality, culture, emotion, vocabulary, etc to establish a connection with mankind - a divine communication that spanned 1000s of years.

Even though Solomon’s Book of Proverbs gave wise advice on living your life as God meant it to be lived, it ultimately points to Jesus Christ, the personification of Wisdom. ‘Generous to the poor’? To the point of death. Not only did Jesus offer compassion and healing to the downtrodden, He gave His life for mankind - the “poor in spirit”. “When I am lifted up [on the cross], I will draw all men to Myself” ~John 12:32

“Christ is the power of God, and the wisdom of God….But God has brought you into union with Christ Jesus, and God has made Christ to be our wisdom. By him we are put right with God; we become God's holy people and are set free.” ~1Corinthians 1:24, 30

“Blessed' by being generous to the poor? Beyond our imagination: “This Jesus, God raised up, of which we all are witnesses. Being exalted to the right of God, and receiving the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, He poured out this which you now see and hear. ~Acts 2:32-33

“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature, and He upholds the universe by the word of His power. After making purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” ~Hebrews 1:3
