Giving Thanks For You
"I have not stopped giving thanks to God for you" ~ Ephesians 1:16
When I started college, my mom wrote to me every week - just a card with a few words, but she always ended with this verse. In such an uncertain time, this was comforting. There were no cell phones, you could only talk on the land line sunday nights for free, so communication was very different in those days! Can you imagine not knowing what your child was doing for weeks on end??
Let's go back 2000 years - communication could have been once in a life-time!
Many of Paul's writings, like the book of Ephesians, were actually letters. They would be read aloud in the home church, probably several times and maybe even copied by someone who could write, and then passed to believers in the next town. (Scholars believe that there were 4 letters to the Corinthian church, but we only have 2 of them.) Paul had to pack alot of punch into each letter - I've read that Ephesians was the only letter that wasn't written in response to a certain issue. It is just full of doctrine and instruction and love.
I love this section of scripture (Eph 1:15-21), which is possibly the longest sentence in the Bible, packing in all the things:
"For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks concerning you, making mention of you in my prayers: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your heart having been enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ, having raised Him from the dead, and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenlies, above every ruler and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the coming age."
