Grow in Grace

Image of a purple flower with the words "but grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. 2 Peter 3:18"

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.” ~2 Peter 3:18

This is such a beautiful benediction - my Grandfather would close his letters with this verse, so it has special meaning for me. It felt like a hug. Perhaps Peter had the same intent - his audience was anxiously waiting for the promised return of Jesus (this used to stress me out - here we are 2000+ years later and still waiting). But a few verses before, Peter says, “hey, I know you’re impatient, but God’s so-called delay means that more and more people are saved.” If Jesus had come back in the first century, the world’s population was only 200 million. Today, it is 8 billion. We don’t know when the time will be right, but we trust that it will be perfect and according to God’s plan.

In the meantime, Peter implores us to grow in grace and knowledge. That doesn’t mean that God gives us more grace - it is like His love, it cannot increase or decrease. But just as we can gain knowledge by learning and spending time with Him, our understanding of that infinite grace expands and works to mature us as Christians. The Holy Spirit produces those attributes in us - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23) and we can’t help but bubble over in praise!

“You are worthy, our Lord and God, the Holy One, to receive the glory and the honor and the power; because You created all things, and by Your will they existed and they were created. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory. Blessed be His glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with His glory! To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen and Amen!”
