He Must Increase
“He must increase but I must decrease.” ~John 3:30
John the Baptizer said these words - He was talking about Jesus. (Jesus had three close friends named John. It gets confusing! Beloved John, his closest friend [who wrote this book], John the Baptizer, his cousin and John Zebedee, one of the 12). Anyway, John the Baptizer was a big deal - everyone was talking about him, either followers entranced by his teaching or haters trying to get him in trouble. He was the type of guy who was charismatic, mysterious, exciting - he lived off the land, was rough and tough and had a message that all of Israel was longing to hear.
But, his greatest attribute was humility - he knew that his mission in life was to “prepare the way for the Lord” (Malachi 3:1 “Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.) No matter how popular he was, John was to hand over the crowds to Messiah. He did it lovingly and willingly.
We can learn from this. Everything John did was to highlight Jesus. Shouldn’t we do the same?
Have a blessed day!
