Help My Unbelief

Outline of a figure holding a child over their head with the words "Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help my unbelief! Mark 9:24"
Mark 9:24  “Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

This scene took place right after the transfiguration - I wondered why. But maybe so that we are able to see a comparison to the world we live in. Heaven and earth. To set the stage, a man brought his demon-possessed child to Jesus and said, “If you can help him, please do”. Are we like this sometimes? Not really believing that God can sort something out? Or we try to bargain with Him. “I’ll be really really good if you do such-and-such”. OR….we worry. Ouch. Worrying is not trusting God. There is a difference between worry and concern - I’m talking about not 'giving it to God'.

I had major surgery two years ago that was a long time in coming - every time my mind touched on all the things, I simply pictured myself handing it to God. As a result, everything went perfectly. I truly believe I saw what could happen when I “walked by faith and not by sight”.

Back to our story…Jesus said, “IF I can help? All things are possible if you just believe”. That hit the father right where it hurt. Through tears he immediately cried, “I believe” and then something interesting, “help my unbelief”. I love that! He knew his faith wasn’t strong. We each have a certain amount of faith [“Use good sense and measure yourself by the amount of faith that God has given you.” Romans 12:3b] but this tells us that we can and should ask for more! God will never refuse that! He wants us to trust Him no matter what the circumstances.

Eph 2:8 For by grace you are saved through the faith of Christ, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.

‌Have a blessed day!
