His Compassions Never Fail
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” ~Lamentations 3:22-23
One of the best-loved hymns comes from these verses - ‘Great is Thy Faithfulness', written in 1923 by Thomas Chisholm. I can still hear my Grandfather belting out the refrain in church.
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
all I have needed Thy hand hath provided:
great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
I remember the words because of the music - such a great tool to hide scripture in our hearts. We read in Hebrews that the Word of God is alive and powerful - this verse is proof of that. We can never “run out” of God’s love. He never says, “Oh, you used up your quota for the week. Sorry”.
If you are a parent, you know this - no matter what your child does, no matter how badly they behave, no matter their age, nothing can completely smother your love. How much more is our Father in heaven?
Things might look bleak today, but there is always tomorrow. ‘When I’m stuck with a day that’s grey and lonely, I just stick out my chin and grin and say: Oh! The sun’ll come out, tomorrow…' I’ll translate that to Son and things look bright again. Jesus is our hope that never fails - which reminds me of another part of that great hymn….
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father
There is no shadow of turning with Thee
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be
