I Press On
"I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." ~Philippians 3:14
We know that Paul was an athlete - he writes about boxing and training. One translation says, "I keep running hard to the finish line". I wonder why modern translations seem to water-down the text. The original language uses the words, "upwards summons" - there is a sense of urgency that goes along with "pursue" (instead of 'press on'). It's not a one-and-done deal - Paul admonishes us to stay the course. Peter tells us to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." 2 Peter 3:18
I love this translation of 2 Corinthians 4:16-18:
"So we're not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without His unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration planned for us. There's far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can't see now will last forever."
This is why we study and go to church - it's a continual charging of our spiritual batteries. Hiding God's word in your heart helps to keep you on track. Keep persevering. Don't get discouraged. Remember, if you fall, you can't fall OFF the Rock. If you fall down, He is immediately there to pick you back up. We are never alone!
