I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices.
“I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know Me more than I want burnt offerings.” ~Hosea 6:6
This verse shouts ‘Freedom!’ - in the days of Moses (~1446 BC) through the ministry of Jesus (33 AD), anytime you did something to break God’s law, you had to offer a sacrifice to atone for your sin. But THIS! This was a forecast of Jesus and the new covenant that would bring relationship between God and man. I wonder if anyone would have understood this - we STILL have denominational splits because of this very point.
Many many many believe that God works on a point system - the more good things you do, the higher on the scale you rise. Don’t we all entertain that concept from time to time? It’s human nature. Movies, TV and books center around good being rewarded.
But Jesus brought something that blows that out of the water - He gave Himself to atone for the sin of the world. HE was the sacrifice so we simply have to acknowledge God. Get to know Him. Talk with Him. Listen for His voice. He doesn’t want our “good works” if our heart isn’t in tune with Him. He wants our love. If we are knowing Him, then our whole being will do the things that please God. Like Jesus said in Matthew 22:36-40, the most important command is to love - everything hangs on that - if you love with God’s love, you will please Him. Isn’t that an amazing freedom?!
Have a blessed day!
