"If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.” ~1 Corinthians 3:13-14

“Their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.” ~1 Corinthians 3:13-14

This passage has to be viewed in the context of the surrounding verses - the Christians in Corinth were splitting into camps based on who their pastor was. Some claimed Paul, while others followed Apollos (an exciting well-spoken charismatic teacher). Paul is explaining that God is the source of all teaching.

Verses 5-7 “Apollos and I are merely servants who helped you to have faith. It was the Lord who made it all happen. I planted the seeds, Apollos watered them, but God made them sprout and grow. What matters isn't those who planted or watered, but God who made the plants grow.”

But there is also great accountability for the teachers - did they proclaim the gospel with grace and truth (compared to gold, silver and precious stones) or was their message distorted, burning up like wood, hay and stubble on the Day the Lord comes?

Fire is purifying and cleansing. Check out another passage in this verse 15: “But if your work is burnt up, then you will lose it; but you yourself will be saved, as if you had escaped through the fire.”

Our words are so important - James says, “no man can tame the tongue. It is an unrestrainable evil, full of deadly poison.” I know many people who have been wounded mentally by church teachings. Wars have occurred because of twisted religion. But thankfully, there are more who have been nurtured and cared for by those who love the Lord.

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”” ~Isaiah 52:7
