Is not wisdom found among the aged?
“Is not wisdom found among the aged?” ~Job 12:12
Hmmm…as I get older, I like to think wisdom increases. Life experience tends to widen the horizon of our minds, giving us a greater pool to draw from. But don’t we belittle our elderly? Especially in America. Feeble body does not equate with a feeble mind, but it seems that we act that as though it does. I remember the moment I realized that a frail great grandma had lived though not one but two world wars, survived the Great Depression and had successfully birthed and raised several children through times of sketchy healthcare. Oh the stories! What wisdom had accrued!
“Wisdom comes with winters,” Oscar Wilde once said, in direct opposition of Socrates, who said “The only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing”. But if we go to scripture, we find that wisdom is in God. The next verse in Job 12 states, “With God are wisdom and might; He has counsel and understanding.“ We are made in His image; we have the mind of Christ; we are in Him Who is called Wisdom FOR us.
As we accumulate winters, we come to realize that James 1:5 is true - we can ask for wisdom and it’s immediately given. That’s wisdom right there! We might continually feel that we ‘let God down’, but that is impossible. He WANTS us to rely on Him. A shepherd doesn’t get mad at the sheep who foolishly wanders off. He guides them back with love and understanding. Over and over again.
It’s no coincidence that we are called sheep!
Have a blessed day!
