“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified" ~1 Thessalonians 4:3-4

“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable” ~1 Thessalonians 4:3-4
During the first century, sexual immorality was rampant and used to leverage power and status in society. Prostitution was an accepted practice and part of the worship of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty and desire. ‘Sacred Sexuality’ was at the core of worship.
But, Paul teaches an alternative way to these new Christian believers. Francios du Toit translates this passage: “The resolve of God declares you innocent; this announcement frees you from fornication. Every one of you should take ownership of your bodies with utmost care. The vessel takes its value from the treasure it holds.”
That treasure is Jesus Christ; we are one with Him. Du Toit continues in verse 5: “Lusting after things with an all-consuming longing is typical of people who do not know how complete they already are in God.”
“And because you belong to Christ you are complete, having everything you need. Christ is ruler over every other power and authority.” ~Colossians 2:10
Father, instill in us the reality that we are complete in You and that You have conquered all opposing forces that tempt us to believe that we need more and more and yet more. Direct that ‘all-consuming longing’ toward You and give us a sense of Your peace and contentment. Let us be the vessels that You have created us to be - image bearers of Your Son. Amen!
