Just As It Has Taught You, Remain in Him
“As for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as His anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in Him.” ~1 John 2:27
The word ‘anointing’ makes me uncomfortable - it takes my mind first to a strange church service I once attended. Oil was being poured on certain people, not just a drop or two, but POURED. Nothing was explained amidst the confusion and chaos. I knew that wasn’t the place for me.
Anoint actually means “to set someone apart, to authorize and equip him or her for a task of spiritual importance by the power of the Spirit of God.” In 1 John, the writer is focused on warning the church about the dangers of the world apart from God. The church was young and new - they could easily be convinced to go back to their pagan practices or Jewish law, especially when the government considered Christians to be public enemy number 1.
Some use this verse as an excuse to skip church, but John is referring to false teachers, who ran rampant at that time. In other words, “don’t listen to anyone who preaches anything other than Jesus Christ. You have received the Holy Spirit Who guides and directs you. He will prick your conscious if something is wrong. Keep asking for the truth and He will show you.”
We should also pay attention to these words. There is so much out there that takes attention away from Jesus. John said it best…”Remain in Him”.
Have a blessed day!
