Keep Your Lives Free
September 30, 2022
Hebrews 13:5-6 - Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
We aren’t sure who wrote this chapter in Hebrews but because there is a reference to “our brother Timothy”, they believe the writer is Paul.
In this passage, the writer is warning about the dangers of greed. Did you know that the phrase, “money is the root of all evil” is not actually Biblical? Wealth can be used properly and enjoyed without sin. What the Bible does say in Timothy 6:10 is that “The LOVE of money is the root of all kinds of evils.” The unhealthy desire for wealth has ruined many lives.
Verse 5 talks about being content with what we have. Contentment is not found in financial security or things that we can buy or own. It’s not in positions of power and can’t be secured through learning everything we can. Contentment has more to do with WHO a person is than WHAT a person has.
God wants us to understand that He is all that we need. He will never leave us or forsake us. God is enough!
May we develop a character that is free from the love of money and may we strive to be content in all things, knowing that God Himself has promised to be with us in all the changing scenes of our lives.
