“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have" ~Hebrews 13:5-6

“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” ~Hebrews 13:5-6
These phrases sound so familiar, don’t they? The author of Hebrews (no one knows for certain who that was) must have been well-versed in the Old Testament because he writes them almost verbatim here, centuries upon centuries later.
“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” comes from Deuteronomy 31:6 - off the lips of Moses as he passes the leadership torch to Joshua. This shows us that God never changes - His promises are solid. We can count on them and they will never ever fail.
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” is a direct quote from one of David’s psalms of praise - Psalm 118:6
Both of these are the reasons given to keep us from greed, from wanting more and more, from making money an idolatrous entity. God provides what we need at minimum. And He loves to make that cup overflow and it’s always more than we can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).
It’s easy to get anxious about financial things - especially when our grocery bills threaten to reach higher than our mortgage and car payments combined, when healthcare costs go through the roof, when we have to choose what medication to pay for this month. These are very real issues for many.
God cares for you - about every one of those worries. He WILL provide a way. Stay rooted in His promises. Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow you all the days of your life, and you shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
