“Let Him lead me to the banquet hall, and let His banner over me be love.” ~Song of Solomon 2:4

This takes me back to summer camp 50 some years ago (possibly even this very week) to the evening chapel service where we belted out the words to this verse - “He led me to the banquet-eating table, His banner over me is love”. At that time, I had no idea what this meant, other than that God loved me.

What DOES it mean? Well, there are so many layers. First, we are victorious people. The banner was flown after the battle, announcing triumph. This victory, HIS victory was already achieved through the cross (Colossians 2:15). Jesus has rescued us from the enemy and has claimed us as His own!

In ancient times, the banqueting hall was a place of celebration, indicating wealth and majesty. Whenever any form of ‘banqueting’ is mentioned in the Bible, it is referring to salvation. Check out Revelation 19:9 “And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.”

The banner also declares identity. The banner of Jesus is love. That is our identity. LOVE!

“Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither present troubles nor future uncertainties, nor any powers, height, depth, or anything else in creation can separate believers from God’s love in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:38-39)
