“Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” ~James 1:4

“Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” ~James 1:4
This verse follows those that speak of being joyful during difficult times because our character attribute of perseverance will develop and mature. I’ve read that perseverance is not passive tolerance but a deliberate steadfast endurance.
Sounds miserable in some respects. But I keep thinking about the TV show, Survivor - those players WANT to suffer - they WANT to sleep in the rain, starve, work hard at challenges - “NOW we’re playing Survivor” is often heard.
Having a sense of accomplishment is the key, perhaps. Not riding coat-tails, but working towards a goal.
We know that our spiritual life has nothing to do with “deserving”. But the way in which we act during the tough times paints a picture that is visible to all. Is our life’s canvas full of grumbles and pity parties? Or filled with faith that God will not leave us to mire through on our own? Are we a Jonah who runs in the opposite direction or a Daniel who sleeps with lions? I want to be a Daniel. How about you?
