Let There Be Light
“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness.” ~Genesis 1:3-4
That verse always sends a shiver down my back - there is something so powerful about commanding light. How many of us have said that as we were turning on a lamp or flipping the switch? I bet you added a deep voice, as well - "Let there be light!" Bam!
Of all creation verses, this one is most meaningful to me - there are so many layers of symbolism to this - most significant is the foreshadow of Christ. He told us Himself, that He is the light of the world right after the Pharisees tested Him about the stoning of the adulterous woman.
"Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.” Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."" John 8:10-12
"In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. John 1:4
"I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness." John 12:46
Over and over, Jesus is revealing Himself to be the bringer of Light, not darkness. Life, not death. Forgiveness, not condemnation. John 3:17 "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him."
C.S. Lewis wrote in his book titles ‘Miracles’ that we are able to perform the same miracles that God did, but only in our human-ness. So, every time you turn on a lamp, you are correct to say, "Let there be light!"
‘This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine. I’m gonna let it shine, Every where I go.”
