Let Us Keep in Step with the Spirit
“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” ~Galatians 5:24-25
Keeping in step with someone….that means you are side by side - friends and companions. You’re on the same page and in synchrony. If you are out of step, there are awkward bumps and excuse-mes. Companionship is not the focus.
I think back to my highschool marching band days. ‘Keeping in step’ was the first thing we learned. There is beauty to watching symmetry in motion, isn’t there? Like watching Irish dancing…it’s mesmorizing.
If humans can manage to do this, what is it like with the Spirit of God?? Wow. It steals my breath for a moment. No struggle, no trying to match gaits, no embarrassing bumps. The Spirit is one with us. Oh, I wish I could see that. Maybe that is why God allows us to get pretty near perfect - to get a sense of what it’s like with God.
He tells us HOW to step in time with Him. Read the previous verses: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” [Galatians 5:22-23]. And He also ENABLES us to do these things! Incredible. Absolutely staggering when you think about it.
I may use the Mary Poppins song, “Step in Time” to help me remember this. (sorry!)
Have a blessed day!
