Let Us Rejoice Today and Be Glad
“The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.” ~Psalm 118:24
The Lord has done it…what is ‘it’? David writes that God did it today and we’re to be happy about it. This is where context is so important. Check out the surrounding verses:
22 The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;
23 the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.
24 The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad. 25 Lord, save us!
This is all about Jesus and what He has done! We know from other scripture that the Rejected-Stone-becoming-the-Cornerstone is referring to Jesus. But wait, David wrote this hundreds of years before Jesus walked the earth. How could “He have done it this very day”?
God lives outside of time so any plan is pretty much done! God says, “My will WILL be accomplished (Isaiah 41:10). The Triune God's story was already written - that means that Jesus has already conquered death. Jesus has already defeated the enemy. Jesus is already victorious. And Jesus already died for you. And best of all, Jesus has already saved us. It’s a done deal!
If you grew up in the church in the 60s and 70s, you’ve probably sang a kid’s song based on the verse. It’s been reverberating in my brain the all day. “Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say Rejoice!” Sing away at the top of your lungs - it certainly clears away the cobwebs and the sorrows! Again I say, Rejoice!
