Love Your Enemies

“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” ~Luke 6:27-28

That’s tough….it sounds all nice and religious, but take a moment and think about what Jesus is saying. “Love your enemies”. How do you love someone who abused you? Or hurt your pet on purpose? How can you sincerely ask God to bless someone who ruined your business or stole from you? It is an impossible task.

Impossible, yes….UNLESS you are working with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit’s mission is reconciliation, peace, love, unity…nouns that go hand-in-hand with the verbs of these verses: love, do good, bless and pray. In other words, these things ARE possible when we are fueled by the Spirit. How does that happen? We just have to ask. That’s it. Just ask and listen for His voice, which comes in the form of an internal peace - I think of it as a hug from God. I KNOW when it’s right because the Spirit also acts as our conscious - I picture Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio constantly directing, correcting and guiding.

When we have hard things to do, God doesn’t expect us to make a go alone. He longs to help us and makes the impossible possible.

“The LORD waits with longing to be gracious to you” ~Isaiah 30:18a
