Love Your Neighbor

“And the second is like it. Love your neighbor as yourself.” ~Mathew 22:39

The Pharisees were doing their usual poking and prodding at Jesus, trying to trip Him up. I get the feeling that they chose their smartest, a lawyer, to ask, "Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in Moses' Teachings?

Jesus answered him, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and most important commandment. The second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.' All of Moses' Teachings and the Prophets depend on these two commandments."

That pretty much shut them up. Who could argue? It included the 'Shema’ Deuteronomy 6:5, the verse they said, and still do, every time they enter the Synagogue. It also covers Leviticus 19:18 which is a list of commands that the Lord gave Moses for the Israelites. In fact, there is a famous story where someone told a Torah expert that he would convert to Judaism if the entire Torah could taught in a few minutes. The expert quoted this verse and said, “That is the whole Torah; the rest is just commentary.  Go and study it".

We need this today! Who is our neighbor? Everyone. Whether we agree with them or not, no matter how different they are, how far their views are from ours, they are still our neighbors and we are to love them. There is so much hate circulating that can be stifled with love. God is the judge, not us. That doesn’t mean to ignore the evil, but there are ways to handle confrontation and disagreements. This Golden Rule is prevalent in all cultures throughout all times, which is amazing, really. Life-changing. More than the latest packing hack, mascara or recipe. Love is truly able to change our lives.
