"Make straight the way for the Lord.’” ~John 1:23

“John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’” ~John 1:23

Anytime I read these verses about John the Baptist, I am transported back in time to 2014 when my youngest was cast in Godspell. I was attending a college visit with our middle one and got the call about audition results. “You’re JESUS??”, I loudly exclaimed in an auditorium full of prospective students and parents, miserably failing to remain under the radar for my daughter’s sake.

I wasn’t sure how I felt about that role for a girl, but I trusted the director and prayed that her performance would nudge people to investigate the real Jesus. It opened with the song, “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord”, sung by John the Baptist. The show was mesmerizing and it opened my eyes to see an additional layer of love demonstrated by Jesus in the scriptures. I realized the my daughter was not supposed to BE Jesus, but was to portray His character, which is defined by the fruits of the Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control.

Father, thank you for using secular means to unveil Your Son - motivate us to dig deep and research anything we question, embrace the truth, adding to the firm foundation that is Your Son.
